Johnson and Wales Men's Volleyball Season Dedicated to Bubba

By BJ Larson and Kris Hartwell

On the night of August 28th 2005, a high speed police pursuit ended with a stolen car crashing into an SUV causing one tragic death that changed our lives forever. The life that was lost in the SUV that night was our friend Brian “bubba” Kapko. Kris and I and have been best friends with Bubba for the last 15 years. He was known for his infectious smile and loud laugh. He made friends with anyone he came across and was love by everyone he met. Bubba was planning on attending JWU in the fall of 2005 to start the next chapter of his life. The short time he spent out in Colorado he became extremely close with the entire volleyball team plus many more. Even though the people out here knew him for such a short time they considered him a brother.

Bubba’s mom, Nancy, joins us tonight, to help commemorate the 2006 JWU men’s volleyball season in Bubba’s honor. Bubba was planning on joining the men’s volleyball team, so in his honor we would like to present Nancy with a #37 jersey securing bubba’s spot as a member of the JWU men’s volleyball team always and forever. On behalf of the entire university and men’s volleyball team we would like to thank you so much for raising such a wonderful human being that was an inspiration to us all. He will never be forgotten and always have a special place in all of our hearts for the rest of our lives.
